On the eve of Day of the Dead Hanal Pixán or Soul Food is a Maya tradition that celebrates the memory of the dead, where food and drinks to the souls of the faithful departed is offering. It is believed that only the body dies, the soul lives and is still present and even return home mainly day of dead to be honored after traveling the road that once led.

The main tradition of this ritual is to prepare a table like an altar, where the typical food of the season, or the favorite food of the deceased, decorated with candles and flowers, even the photograph of the deceased is offering. Depending on the age of the deceased is how you should decorate the altar, if the deceased is a child must be decorated with bright colors, toys and fruits.

The day is expected to deceased should have everything ready and leave nothing pending, it is believed that if something failed to do, the souls come to perform outstanding work, which would be impolite.

This tradition is a mixture of traditions of the Maya and the European conquerors, tradition means help the deceased in the journey to the afterlife.

Since the main element of this tradition is the food, best of all is that the offering is not only for the dead, families also enjoy these delicious dishes, which of course have Mayan names.

In Mexico we like to always see the positive side to any situation and although the loss of a loved one is sad, this tradition allow ourselves to remember with those who still here to honor and cherish life, celebrate death as a cycle which no one is exempt.
